I created a new shelfie pinboard over on pinterest – it’s a great place to gather inspirational images and create a mood board for your interior design projects. If you’re thinking ‘what on earth is a shelfie’, it’s a snap of a bookshelf or shelf. For the bookworms it’s a way of showing off your literary prowess and for the interiors fans out there it’s a way of showing off your styling skills. You can follow the BritishStyleUK pinterest boards here for more interiors inspiration.
My DIY project over Christmas was to sort out one of the walls in my recently-decorated Stiffkey Blue bedroom. I’d ordered this set of brass geometric airplant holders (£18.97 from JEREMIbyAGA on Etsy) and at first, I was planning to suspend them from the ceiling. But after I’d painted the room, I decided that this corner needed something more as it was too dark and dull! Airplants are an easy and low-maintenance way to add some greenery to your home. They don’t need any soil and just a light misting of water one a week or so. I bought these for £3 each from PASiNGA on Etsy.
As I am now a proud airplant-carer, I couldn’t resist this mid-century modern brass plant mister (£20.11 from JEREMIbyAGA on Esy). I love it when you can have items in the home that are not only useful, but really beautiful too! So I decided to put in a floating shelf in the little dark corner of my bedroom. Something to brighten it up and make a feature shelfie as well as a practical place to keep a candle, piece of art or a book too.
I chose a simple white floating shelf with an oak veneer surround (£39 from John Lewis) – felt that an all-white shelf would be too much of a contrast to my oak bedroom furniture. I styled my shelfie with an original painting that I picked up from my Mum’s home City of Wroclaw. This bridge is the iconic Tumski bridge which has thousands of love locks on it. My fiancé and I bought a lock and wrote our initials on it before attaching it to the bridge and throwing out key in the river. I bought him this painting as a reminder of our trip!
I placed the shelf so it was level with the bottom of the mirror and feel that the room has a wonderful balance now and is much more interesting then it was before! And just as a reminder that this blog is just a passion of mine and that my son is my real job – he thought it would be funny to try and get my attention! It’s not the first time he’s photo-bombed my interior shoots and I’m sure it won’t be the last! Why did I include this photo? Well, because it’s real – my home is a real family home and not a show house. It’s full of character and characters and that’s why I love it so much!
