Being a home owner is an ongoing investment.
Whether your house is a new build or a period property, you are going to run into problems with fixtures and fittings which need to be addressed.
While some smaller tasks may be easy to take care yourself, there are other issues which you may be unsure of whether it is worth calling in a professional or attempting to do it yourself.
Chores involving plumbing and plastering require a lot of skill to complete to a high standard. So, if something springs a leak or when holes appear it can leave you debating whether to shell out for a repair or attempt to fix it yourself.
If this is a situation you have found yourself in and you’re not sure of your next step, read on for a point in the right direction.
Plumbing
Plumbing is an essential part of a house, without it you’d struggle to get anything done! Therefore, if something goes wrong with your water systems, you’ll want it fixed as soon as possible.
Something as seemingly simple as a DIY plumbing job to fit a towel radiator, could cause a slow water leak that might eventually turn to rot and cause mould.
If you’re unsure of your ability, always contact a qualified plumber for assistance with jobs like this.
Painting
Painting is one of the renovation tasks that have the most impact on your home’s aesthetic. Because of this, if you want a more professional look, hire a decorator – this may be especially needed with tricky jobs like wallpapering landings and stairs.
If it’s simply a room that needs a lick of paint, why not grab that masking tape and have a go yourself. You can always add a second coat to cover up any mishaps! Remember to mix your paint cans in a large bucket before starting, to ensure consistency across the room.
Plastering
Unless you’re a dab hand with a trowel, this is one for the professionals.
There is nothing more annoying than trying to paint an uneven wall, and if you want to get a perfectly flat surface this can be much harder than it looks!
Consider the costs
If you do the work yourself, this will need to be carried out in your spare time. Consider whether you would find this fun or too much to handle?
Half the investment into renovations will be dedicated to materials, whether you to choose to take the task on yourself or not. So, with that in mind, are you confident you will be happy with the end result if you choose to do it yourself?
If not, it is definitely worth paying for the professional. This is particularly crucial for the more complicated jobs, as you may end up paying for an expert anyway to correct your bodged DIY job!
Hopefully after reading this you are feeling more confident in your renovation choices, regardless of which way you choose to go about them! Remember that if you invest in a professional, be sure to do your research into their reputation and ask for examples of their previous work.
