Just before I flew out to Cyprus for my cousin’s wedding, I was invited to take part in the QVC Makeover Challenge. I knew of QVC as the shopping channel, but I didn’t realise that you could browse their offers and buy online too! Straight away, I knew I wanted to focus on our spare room. We converted our loft last year and typically everything that used to be in the loft, just got dumped back into the new bedroom! The furniture and any home accessories are just left-overs from the rest of the house and I’m yet to get anything specifically with that room in mind : (
So it definitely needs some love – it’s still a blank canvas and the only room in the house that I haven’t got round to decorating yet. It’s a great space with quirky shapes – but it is small and so you can’t have anything to overwhelming in there. Being a guest bedroom too – I want to keep it fairly neutral (well compared to my other projects anyway!) as well as bright and airy.
If you’re a regular reader of my blog, then you’ll know we’re not afraid of a bit of DIY! And this loft conversion was entirely DIY. Luckily, my husband is an architect and my brother-in-law is an ex-roofer, turned site foreman. So between them and some other friends and family with equally awesome skills – 5 weekends later and we had a whole new bedroom with it’s own staircase. We used up every inch of possible space up there whilst sticking to the strict local conservation rules. As well as being a space for family and friends to stay over – one of us will often kip up there if we’re not well or the little one is having a bad night! So our loft is a bit of an oasis from the rest of the house and my aim was to make it a comfortable haven for whoever is sleeping there.
QVC have such an abundance of products and some from top UK designers such as Kelly Hoppen and Julien Macdonald. In the end I decided to focus on the bedding – a touch of designer luxury is just what this space needed! And if it’s good enough for Kelly Hoppen, it’s certainly good enough for my guests! The Kelly Hoppen 800TC Cairo Egyptian cotton jacquard 6 piece duvet set contains everything you need to give your bed a whole new look. With an 800 thread count and 100% Egyptian cotton – you’re pretty much guaranteed to not want to get out of bed in the morning. The sateen finish is a method of weaving which leaves the fabric with a glossier finish. This means that it’ll reflect light more than standard bedding and a good option for a room with limited natural light. I love the block colour of this bedding with it’s delicate geometric design.
I also chose the Northern Lights 100% cotton yarn dye herringbone fringed throw for extra cosiness on cooler nights. With it’s brushed flannel weave, and natural fibres – it means that this throw is super soft and cosy. Best of all… it’s machine washable so an ideal blanket or throw for the bed or sofa. In fact, I’m tempted to keep this on the sofa as my new favourite blanket… ; )
My guest room is still an ongoing project, but at least the bedding matches now! In fact, I may just sleep up there more often as these Kelly Hoppen bed sheets are DIVINE! The QVC Makeover Challenge has certainly brought the room together more and made it more of a bedroom and less of a dumping ground.
My next job in this room is to source some fabulous wallpaper – although I’m not looking forward to papering all those nooks and crannies! I’m thinking something quite delicate but colourful at the same time. I may even take inspiration from the Egyptian geometric design of the bed sheets! Thanks to QVC for inviting me to the QVC Makeover Challenge!

I love this challenge, your redecorating ideas are extremely creative and the loft looks so airy and uplifting, but not too dull at the same time! These ideas can be reused for all kinds of rooms. With regards to your idea of your loft as a “haven” away from the hustle of everyday life, a shed/extra room in the garden would be perfect for that as well, with a greater freedom for decoration since you’ll be designing the shape yourself!
