I have driven past The Spring Tavern in Ewell so many times over the past seven years that I’ve lived in Epsom, and every time I say ‘I really need to try that place’. Seven years later and I finally made it! A wonderful couple of hours not chasing a (very fast) toddler about the place was a welcome opportunity! Despite being on a corner of a busy road, The Spring Tavern has a lovely outdoor area. Traditional wooden benches dotted about the olive trees and well-kept shrubs of The Spring Tavern’s patio area. I could imagine sitting here on a warm summer evening sipping Pimms and nibbling on some of their sharer platters.
As soon as we stepped inside, we regretted that we only had such a short time to stay and enjoy the restaurant. The décor is light and fresh with a lovely balance of rustic and glamour. As you wander around the restaurant and bar, there are some really stylish spots to settle down in. Bold colours, mirrored panelling and fun styling such as the Union Jack give The Spring Tavern a real sense of personality.
There’s a fantastic log fire too which is regularly topped up by staff and will keep you warm and cosy on even the coldest of days.
With a seasonal menu, The Spring Tavern not only adapts it’s food to suit the weather – but it means there will always be something new to try. Items on the menu include Devon crab and crayfish pot, deep-fried crusted Somerset brie and Bury black pudding potato cake for starters; Home-made West country beef burgers, Winter roasted roots and Cropwell Bishop stilton tart and beer-battered line caught cod with twice cooked chunky chips for main and Glensown farm ice cream, winter berry Eaton Mess and salted caramel chocolate tart for desert.
We both went for the Somerset brie (no pics… too hungry!) and the cod and chips and beef burger for main. Needless to say there was nothing left, it was very tasty gastro-pub food – I just wish we had time for desert!
But before dashing off to collect the little one, I did take a sneak-peak in the ladies’ – how cool are these doors!?
I’d recommend The Spring Tavern to anyone looking for a relaxed lunch or dinner in lovely surroundings and very attentive and friendly staff and I’m sure it won’t be another 7 years before I return!
