Transforming your home on a budget

Furniture at Heart of House

Giving your home a stylish update doesn’t have to cost the earth and I’ve been wanting to write a post for a while about transforming your home on a budget. Whether you’re looking to replace a few pieces in your home or you’ve moved into your first home and you’re looking to buy some stylish pieces – I hope this post will inspire you!

When you’re looking to style your home, it can be daunting knowing where to start and what to prioritise. Start by considering where most of your budget needs to go and try to keep these items simple as you won’t want to keep replacing them as tastes in style change. That bright red sofa and patterned curtains may look great today – but you (probably) won’t like them next year, or the year after! You can add colour, texture and pattern in more cost-effective ways through paint or wallpaper if you don’t mind a bit of DIY – and through soft furnishings, prints and accessories too. These things are much easier and cheaper to replace in the long-run.

I remember when I moved into my first home, I spent most of my budget on my bed and kitchen table and chairs! They’re the only pieces I still have eight years on, although the chairs have been reupholstered since… (muddy cat footprints that refused to clean).

Heart of House is a new homeware and furniture range at Argos which includes over 1600 practical and stylish items for the home which are designed to be durable yet elegant. This includes little luxuries, such as 100% Egyptian cotton bedding (like the one featured below), as well as basic items for your home.

I’ve selected some of my favourite items below and I hope they give you some ideas for styling your own home.

By keeping your furniture in neutral shades, it gives a light airy feeling to a space. A glass coffee table like this Oakington solid oak coffee table adds a stylish and modern touch. The Kennet ladder bookcase is a trend that’s unlikely to go away any time soon. The openness of the bookcase allows light to flow through it and is a great solution to a small space.

This Caesar grey 100% cotton bedding set is one of my favourite items from this collection. Bedding made from natural materials is so important as the fabric breathes keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. Plus the pintuk detailing gives a luxurious touch – and all for £29.99! The leather strapped hanging mirror is another on-trend item and would look perfect in a bathroom or hallway.

Lighting at Heart of House

Lighting can often be an overlooked element to a home’s interior style, but it’s one of the most important elements as it can dramatically change the atmosphere in your room. Bright ceiling lights have a practical use, but there’s nothing more inviting then having soft lighting in the evenings. This can be achieved by having one or two table lamps or a floor lamp. Statement lighting will add a stylish focal point to a space and this copper pendant shade is another 2015 interior design trend. The copper pendant shade has a simple design, but the light reflects from the copper wire making it glow and creating a fantastic pattern. For a touch of vintage style, I’d recommend teaming this copper pendant shade with a spiral filament light bulb.
