Making your bathroom look like new is not as difficult as it sounds. Whether you’re preparing your home to rent, sell or just want an overhaul of your bathroom without ripping it all out and starting again! The bathroom is often the most overlooked room in the house as we generally spend the least amount of time in there. But it’s the space that the whole family use as well as your guests – so giving it a simple refresh can make your bathroom look like new.
Paint it
Paint is the quickest and most cost-effective way to update any room including the bathroom. Get yourself a tin of bathroom paint and give those tired bathroom walls a good refresh. Painting skirting, cabinets and any other woodwork will make your bathroom look like new. Painting your bathroom is a great way do inject some colour too – perhaps choose some nice new towels to complement your new bathroom look.
Tile it
If your tiles aren’t looking too bad, then you may just want to consider cleaning or replacing the grout. Bathroom tiles can look old very quickly – especially if you have poor ventilation in your bathroom. I have this problem in my bathroom and even though we open the window and wipe down the shower every day – the grout still gets black quite quickly.
If your tiles have had it, then replacing them is not as big a job as you might think. Architectural bath and tile specialists PlumbTile have a huge range of glass tile and stone available.
Tap it
Upgrading your shower head and taps is such an effective way to give your bathroom a new lease of life. Trends in bathroom hardware have moved on a lot in the last decade. Even if you have a traditional bathroom – there are some super stylish bathroom taps that will complement the décor. Just bare in mind that if you replace your sink taps, then you should do the same with the bath and/or shower. They should all be the same finish and style otherwise the overall look just won’t work!
Light it
Lighting is to a space what location is to a property. That might sound dramatic, but I can’t emphasise enough how important lighting is! You should have at least three different sources of light in your bathroom – ceiling lights, wall or illuminated mirror light above the sink and if you have the space… atmospheric lighting such as a small lamp or candles. LED lighting is the way to go as it gives you a better quality of light and is more economical in the longer run.
Accessorise it
Now comes the fun bit – I love accessorising a freshly decorated room! You can go as minimal or maximal as you want here as after all it is your bathroom! New towels, bath mat, baskets, containers, laundry baskets etc. are all practical but can change the look and feel of your bathroom space. Try to stick to the same colour palette to tie it all in together. Decorative accessories such as prints on the walls or a vase of flowers can add the perfect finishing touches to your ‘new’ bathroom.
I hope this has given you loads of ideas for your bathroom refresh!

Thank you – yes it’s amazing how something like a new bath mat can make a difference ; )
Lovely ideas. Accessories are definitely my favourite part, they can make such a difference to the space. We are spoilt for choice these days with so many options available X
Sometimes it’s the little things like refreshing the paint or placing a few accessories that makes all the difference.
Great tips here! Our bathroom is looking frightfully shabby and needs a complete overhaul.
Oh I needed these tips! With 3 kids in the house our bathroom gets over looked all the time so it could do with a spring spruce up! H x
Great tips – my bathroom is in desperate need of a complete overhaul! Kaz x
Lovely tips! I think lighting it very important! I really would love a mirror with a light around it in my bathroom! :) xx
Our bathroom is still unfinished needing a blind and splashback for the sink, but we have problems with the new toilet always blocking so it’s not great really.
A great post. I find that the bathroom is often overlooked,as it is used primarily as a functional place. That needn’t be true. It is a place to relax and unwind. Light reflecting paint allows for light to wash over the space, making your morning wake up a rejuvenating experience. I like what you’ve done with the mirrors around the basin, mirrors are a great way to open up small spaces (which bathrooms often are) using a very functional piece of decor.
