I’m a big fan of the Biscuiteers baking company and feature their beautiful handmade biscuits regularly on my gift ideas blog posts. So when they got in touch to ask if I’d like to go along to one of their icing classes, I was delighted to accept! My sister came along with me – between us we have three toddlers and so we were really looking forward to spending an afternoon together!
The Biscuiteers school of icing takes place in their Notting Hill boutique and if you think the outside looks pretty – wait until you see what’s inside…
Upstairs there’s a shop selling a huge variety of biscuits for all occasions as well as other gift items. At the back there’s a café area where you can have a drink and sample some biscuits and downstairs is a larger seating area where the icing school takes place. The boutique is filled with so many goodies that it’s worth arriving a little early to get a chance to look around (plus if you’ve booked an icing class, you get 10% off). We had a quick cup of tea before heading downstairs to put our Biscuiteers aprons on – which you get to keep!
The first thing I spotted was this stunning wall display of what looks like framed insects, and then I quickly realised that they were all biscuits with beautiful detailing on them.
Biscuiteers’ team of expert icers take us through the steps of icing biscuits. We chose the hearts flower power icing class and we were given a selection of heart and flower shaped biscuits and an array of icing colours to use.
Biscuiteers offered a relaxed and homely atmosphere and we were encouraged to try different techniques to create pattern and texture on the biscuits. There was plenty of tea, coffee and cold drinks available and the friendly staff were on hand to answer our questions and offer their expert tips.
The class really made you appreciate how much work goes into these fabulously artistic biscuits and I now know hot to prevent icing from running and how to fix it!
Once iced, the biscuits were warmed in the oven for the icing to dry to let us add more decorative touches!
Once the class was finished, we were each given a Biscuiteers tin to carefully pack our biscuits away. Below are the ones that my sister and I made – what do you think? Not so bad for icing first-timers hey?
We even got certificated to prove that we are now brilliant Biscuiteer icers : )
And not forgetting that 10% discount, I picked up some dinosaur biscuit cutters for Little K’s 3rd birthday party next month – I’m going to try and put my new skills to good use!
