How to choose bathroom fixtures

Deciding on how to choose bathroom fixtures can be really daunting – but I’ve put together a handy guide to help you through this process. Gone are the days where you simply walked into your local hardware shop and had a few choices of taps or bathroom fixtures. Now there are countless to choose from to suit every style and every budget. My advise on how to choose bathroom fixtures depends largely on these two factors – but there are others to think of too.

Whether you’re just replacing your shower head, or gutting your bathroom – I hope my guide will help to simplify the whole decision-making process on how to choose bathroom fixtures. There are also some insider tips on getting that interior-designed bathroom you’re after without paying top prices.

Plan your bathroom space

If you are starting from scratch, it’s a great opportunity to redesign your bathroom. Sometimes moving a bath or a sink will allow you to make extra space for a shower. It’s becoming more common now for people to scrap having a bath all-together and go for a wet room or a larger shower instead. Although if you enjoy the odd bath and have kids then this won’t be a good idea for you! Look at the space you have available and it’ll make it easier for you to decide how to choose bathroom fixtures. A cloakroom will only need a small sink – but for a bathroom you want a sink where you can place your toothbrush and other essentials on top. If you wear glasses like I do, you’ll know you need somewhere handy to put them when you wash your face! So think about how you use the bathroom as this will help you to determine what kind of features you’re looking for.

Choose your bathroom style

What’s your interior style? What type of property do you have? You can have a modern bathroom in a period property – but not if you’re only replacing part of your bathroom. Consider the rest of the space and what would complement it. There are many modern takes on traditional designs that may be a good compromise. For a minimalist bathroom look for simple and clean lines. Anything that can be recessed such as a ceiling shower head will give a very slick finish. Grohe do some fabulous ones in various designs and price-points.

Storage!

How many people will use this bathroom? A family bathroom is going to need far more storage than a guest bathroom for example. If you have a small bathroom space, your decision on how to choose bathroom fixtures will be really important. Consider a radiator that doubles as a towel rail, under-sink storage and a bathroom cabinet with a mirror are all easy ways to make the most of storage space in the bathroom. Something like this Duravit wall-mounted vanity unit is fab – I could do with one of these! I recently wrote a post about bathroom storage if you need some more ideas ; )

Finishing touches

Taps can hugely change the style of a bathroom and deciding which style of  tap to choose is not as difficult as it seems. Think about times you’ve used hotel or restaurant bathrooms – which style of tap annoyed the hell our of you and which were great to use? Mixer taps are easy for adults to use, but how often does your little one call you to turn the taps off because they’ve got confused which way they turn? You also need to consider the tap’s mounting. Is it going into the wall or the sink? Remember, the style of the tap needs to coordinate with the rest of your bathroom – are you going for clean lines and angular finishes or soft curves? I’ve picked out some of my favourite different designs…
