Why rattan beds are having a moment

Rattan bed French Bedroom Company

Rattan beds as well as other rattan furniture has made a massive comeback over the past few years. Natural, intricate and oh so boho – it’s no surprise that more and more of us are bringing it into the bedroom too. Gone are the days of perfectly made beds and hospital corers. We want our beds to be calming and inviting spaces to dive into after a long day. The beauty of rattan beds is that you can make it as eclectic as you feel comfortable with. It’s more about the base on which to layer your own interior style. Rattan beds can also look amazing in a paired back coastal style bedroom. As rattan originates from tropical climates – it feels right at home in these types of settings.

You’ll often hear materials such as cane and rattan used interchangeably and wonder why! Cane is produced from the rattan palm plant. It’s the outer layer and so cane and rattan are often used in combination to produce all sorts of furniture. I’ve picked out some of my favourite rattan beds available in the UK right now – I hope you get some styling inspiration from these.

The French Bedroom Company have so many beautifully designed rattan beds that I couldn’t simply pick one design.

The eclectic rattan bed below was designed by bohemian interior maven Justina Blakeney for Anthropologie. style into everything she creates. This bed is in her signature “jungalow” style which is a play on her inspirations – jungles and bungalows. Her designs are eclectic, colourful and always imaginative!

Urban Outiftters are also a go-to for eclectic furniture and homewares. The first bed is a contemporary take on 70’s design and the second oozes coastal vibes. One of the beautiful aspects of rattan as a material is that it can have a solid silhouette, but still give an airy feel allowing light to flow through. It allows you to have a statement bed which doesn’t necessarily dominate the space. This is really important in small bedrooms in particular! The rattan bed from Habitat below is a perfect example of this.

These last two beds from The White Company and John Lewis are two takes on pared back coastal interior style. Layering soft natural textures like cotton, wool and washed linen gives a touch of luxury to the humble rattan material. The difficulty now is choosing a favourite out of these!
