Published today, The Maker by Tamara Maynes is all about going beyond simply decorating your home – and becoming the maker of your own home. I was lucky to receive a preview of her fab new book which is full of inspirational crafting projects. Now, I don’t ever use the term ‘craft’ lightly! For me, crafting is more than a Blue Peter project on a rainy afternoon and more about craftsmanship.
If you’ve been watching The Great Interior Design Challenge (#GIDC on twitter), you’ll have noticed that the judges look for more than a well put-together space. Good style, pretty wallpaper, great colour schemes and nice furniture aren’t enough to get those budding interior designers through to the final. The judges want to see innovation – they want to find a Maker. It’s something to inspire all home-makers as often we can fill our homes full of wonderful things that haven’t been bought from a shop.
Tamara Maynes’ book The Maker is full of ideas on bringing raw materials to life. From rugs to wall art, you’ll be inspired to get creative while you share in Tamara Maynes’ love of structure and simplicity, nostalgia and modernity, and a respect for craftsmanship and great design.
I love the idea of being a craftsman (can you say craftswoman? craftsperson?), I’ve always been artistic and creative. But I always felt like I needed to go on courses to learn how to do things like upholstery. I guess it’s because I like to do things properly! Anyhow – Tamara Mayne’s book inspired me to just get on with it and give crafting a go. So I finally gave it a go and upholstered a chair for the first time! And do you know what? They look great! Tamara Maynes The Maker is all about how to craft a space and ‘make’ a home, in the most honest sense. This is something that anyone can do regardless of budget constraints or skill. And if like me, you’ve always wanted to be a Maker, but never had the confidence – buy this book and get inspired!
