The time is almost upon us and there’s just no avoiding it… no I’m not talking about the Rugby World Cup! Winter is coming… it’s time to get those stylish rugs out! If you have hard floors in your home such as stone, wood or tile, placing rugs strategically can transform your home from cool and minimal into cosy chic. The main areas in your home where a rug is needed (if you don’t have carpet) is in the living room, bedroom and dining room. But where you place your stylish rugs is really important – when you’re sitting in your living room or at the dining table, you want your feet to be nice and warm. Having a rug underneath your table and sofa will mean you’re rug has functional use as well as looking fabulous. The same goes for your bedroom – you want your feet to touch the rug as you get out of bed and so be strategic with the rugs your choose for your home and where you place them.

Tips on buying rugs for your home

Do your home work – get your measuring tape out and make sure you know what sized rug you need. Allow for space around the rug – but the space doesn’t have to be even on all sides. A rug can make a room feel longer if there’s a larger space on the sides then top and bottom. Choosing a pattern that leads your eye along the rug can also make a space feel larger.

A sheepskin stylish rug adds warmth and texture

Choose the material and texture of your rugs carefully. You’ll want a hard wearing rug in a hallway or playroom where it’s bound to get some wear and tear. For a living room, kitchen or office you may want to opt for a flat-woven rug. A thinner rug means you won’t be tripping over it, is easier to clean and perfect for an office chair with wheels! A bedroom is the perfect space for a sumptuous rug such as this sheepskin stylish rug shown above – unless you don’t have kids… and then I’d put one in every room in the house! You may also need to consider buying a non-slip layer to put underneath the rug. A general rule of thumb is that the cheaper the rug – the more likely you are to need a non-slip mat!

The shape, pattern and colour of rug really depends on you and your own personal style. A stylish rug can really transform the look and feel of a space – and is a really cost-effective way of giving a room a new look. My personal advise – go for what you love. Don’t pick a rug because it’s in fashion blah blah – it’s your home and you’re the one going to live with it. So choose one that reflects your style and personality!
